Foundation stone laying ceremony
Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister
of Andhra Pradesh and His Highness the Aga
Khan lay the foundation stone of the Aga Khan
Academy, Hyderabad. The Academy will be part
of an integrated network of schools located
in Africa, South and Central Asia, and the
Middle East offering girls and boys an international
standard of education from pre-primary to upper
secondary levels with a rigorous academic and
leadership experience. |

Kampala
Serena Hotel Inaugurated
President Yoweri Museveni and His Highness
the Aga Khan inaugurated the new Kampala Serena
Hotel on 10 November 2006, which is owned and
operated by Tourism Promotion Services (TPS),
an arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development
(AKFED). One of 17 Serena properties in Africa
-- others are in Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and
Mozambique -- the Kampala Serena will have a
significant economic, social and cultural impact
in Uganda.

Global
Centre for Pluralism
His Highness the Aga Khan and The Honourable
Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage,
signed a funding agreement for the Global Centre
for Pluralism in the presence of The Right Honourable
Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada. The
Global Centre for Pluralism is a major new international
centre for research, education and exchange
about the values, practices and policies that
underpin pluralist societies . The Centre, to
be housed in the Old War Museum, a historic
Heritage Building, will start its programmatic
activities in 2007.

Kabul
Serena Hotel Inaugurated
Kabul, Afghanistan, 8 November 2005 - The Kabul
Serena Hotel was officially inaugurated today
by His Excellency President Karzai and His Highness
the Aga Khan. The opening of the restored and
expanded Kabul Serena Hotel, the former Kabul
Hotel, is a milestone in Afghanistan’s
post-conflict redevelopment.

Highness the Aga Khan Awarded the Andrew Carnegie
Medal of Philanthropy 2005
Edinburgh, 4 October 2005 - At a ceremony held
in the Debating Chamber of Scotland’s
Parliament at Holyrood, Edinburgh, His Highness
the Aga Khan was awarded the Andrew Carnegie
Medal of Philanthropy 2005. In receiving the
Medal, the Aga Khan noted the importance in
the Muslim faith of sharing resources and caring
for the poor. He accepted the Award on behalf
of the thousands of dedicated volunteers, from
around the world, who contributed to the work
of the AKDN.

Initiation
of the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat, 3-D
Model of the Ismaili Centre and The Aga Khan's
Investiture as Honorary Companion of the Order
of Canada
Ottawa, Canada, 6 June 2005 - The Aga Khan initiates
the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat, in the
presence of Her Excellency the Right Honourable
Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada.
The Delegation will serve a representational
role for the Imamat and its non-denominational,
philanthropic and development agencies, which
constitute the AKDN. His Highness is also invested
as honorary Companion of the Order of Canada. |

World Congress
Nairobi, Kenya, 22 May 2005 - The Aga Khan emphasises
the importance of press freedom and of investing
in African journalism at the opening ceremony
of the International Press Institute (IPI),
World Congress and 54th General Assembly. The
conference was officially opened by H.E. Hon.
Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya.

Aga
Khan Visits Norway
The Aga Khan spoke at the Nobel Institute and
signed a Memorandum of Understanding between
the Government of Norway and the Aga Khan Development
Network (AKDN). Under the MOU, AKDN and the
Norwegian government will explore and strengthen
cooperation in the areas of culture, health
and education, rural development, capacity building,
human resource development and economic recovery.

Cairo's
Al-Azhar Park Inaugurated
His Highness the Aga Khan and the First Lady,
Her Excellency Madame Suzanne Mubarak, officially
inaugurated Cairo's Al Azhar Park. The 74-acre
Park not only provides a "green lung"
for the densely populated city of Cairo, but
also acts as a catalyst for social, economic
and cultural renewal. What started as one project
actually turned into three: the design and construction
of a park, the restoration of the Ayyubid Wall,
and the community redevelopment of the historically-important
Darb al-Ahmar neighbourhood. Paying tribute
to the Park project, Cairo’s Governor
Dr. Abdel Azim Wazier remarked that the project
did not only aim to expand the green space and
revive the cultural heritage that belongs to
humanity as a whole, but is also intended to
revitalise the environment, handicrafts and
the accumulated experiences.

The
Aga Khan Hospital Ceremony
On 18 March 2005, at the foundation stone laying
ceremony of Phase II of the Aga Khan Hospital
in Dar es Salaam, His Highness the Aga Khan
underlined Africa's massive needs in healthcare
and the growing demand for increasingly sophisticated
hospital-based care. Anna Abdallah, Tanzania's
Health Minister spoke of the strengthening of
cooperation between the government and the private
sector in order to improve health services and
bring them closer to the people. |

Microfinance
Agency Launched
His
Highness the Aga Khan announced the expansion
of a new generation of financial products and
services to help some of the world’s most
vulnerable populations. The Aga
Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM), a new
institution created specifically for this purpose,
will deliver innovative services including micro-credit,
micro-insurance, small housing loans, savings,
education and health accounts, and support for
small entrepreneurs seeking to develop businesses
related to the restoration of cultural assets.

announcing the launch of the Agency, by Jim
Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank. |

Khan Receives 2005 Vincent Scully Prize
His Highness the Aga Khan received the National
Building Museum’s Vincent Scully Prize
yesterday, in recognition of his contributions
to promoting design excellence, urban and rural
revitalization, and historic preservation in
countries where Muslims have a significant presence.
His efforts, the National Building Museum noted,
have “helped bridge the gap of understanding
between Western and Islamic cultures.” |

Aga
Khan Award for Architecture Ceremony, Delhi,
India
At the historic Humayun's Tomb, His Highness
the Aga Khan, together with India's Prime Minister,
Dr. Manmohan Singh, announced the seven recipients
of the 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
The Award, which has a triennial prize of US$500,000,
is the world's largest architectural award.

Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a revival of the
legendary ancient library built in classical Greek
times. The rebuilding of the library has returned
Alexandria to its former status as a centre for
learning and exchange and provided the city with
a landmark building. |

Primary School, Gando, Burkina Faso
This school is the result of one man’s mission
to improve conditions in his village. Not only
did he design the school and raise the funds to
build it; he also secured government support to
train people in building with local materials,
and drew on the strong tradition of community
solidarity to engage all of the villagers in the
construction of this school for their children.

of Al-Abbas Mosque Asnaf, Yemen
Al-Abbas Mosque is a testimony to the living traditions
and architectural achievements of one of the world’s
earliest civilizations. Built over 800 years ago,
the mosque is situated on the remains of a pre-Islamic
shrine or temple on a site considered sacred since
ancient times. |

City Revitalization Programme Old City, Jerusalem
Jerusalem has an extraordinarily long and varied
history, but the urban fabric of the old city
is threatened by overcrowding, lack of maintenance
and poor services. |

to build a house on Turkey’s north Aegean

Towers Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Petronas Towers are the centrepiece of the
mixed-use Kuala Lumpur City Centre complex, set
in the heart of the commercial district of the
city. Rising 452 metres, the towers were certified
the world’s tallest buildings by the Council
of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in 1996. |
